  HERPING IN VENEZUELA

Welcome to Venezuela, one of the 10 most diverse countries in world Herps. The richness in species is so astonishing, that the numbers recorded is superior to those from the United States, Canada and Europe combined. With well over 600 known species of Amphibians and Reptiles (thought to be at least 1000 species, of which the remaining either are  not described or unrecorded), Venezuela offers an unmatchable opportunity to visit and reveal such diversity to field biologists, ecologists, botanists and zoologists in general. Savanna Racer, Chironius carinatus
An additional attraction that can be seen in Venezuela, compared to many other tropical countries, is the great variety of landscapes and biosphere's. Here we can see dense and unexplored rain forests in the two major South America's basins, the Orinoquia and Amazonian, extensive grassland savanna flooded every year (los Llanos), a portion of the longest mountain chain in the world, the Andes, with cloud forests, moor-like páramo and peaks over 5000 meters with ice caps. It even has a long coast line in the Caribbean with beautiful beaches, coral reefs and mangroves. The most stunning sight a mortal can see is the unique and majestic presence of the Tepuis, mountains isolated geologically and chronologically, that abruptly rise from lowland savanna or rain forest up to generally more than 2000 meters (in one case even up to 3014 in Serranía de la Neblina). With steep cliffs dominated by vertical walls and deep canyons, several of worlds highest waterfalls plunge into several hundreds of meter below; where the queen, Angel's Falls, has the right to be in world records with nearly a kilometer in length.
Never before had a team of herp-watchers and researchers, capable to offer an exclusive tour service, been together.  The empirical knowledge of different herpetofaunistic communities in the country, makes that each trip be a guarantee to observe incredible species in the wild. The Tour-Leader, César L. Barrio Amorós, is an authorized expert with many published papers both scientific and promotional on Venezuelan herps as well as from other parts of the world. Sideneck turtle, Platemys platycephala
