PUEBLOS DEL SUR
Mérida City. A/h assistance and
early transfer to Estanques (45 min), (village at the end of Chama river’s
eroded canyon), to see the spectacular transition between desert and rainforest
on the way to the town of Canaguá. This is a climbing road from
400 mts. sea level, to almost 3000 mts at the top! (Páramo El Molino),
this road goes through cactus enviroment, deciduous rainforest, clouded
forest & páramo. Pic-nic breakfast and full day birding (Squirrel
Cuckoo, Bay-headed Tanager, Flame- faced Tanager, Saffron-headed Tanager,

MERIDA CABLE CAR

and early transfer to the Teleférico’s first station in Plaza Las
Heroinas ( five stations), taking the first car in the morning all the
way to the top, (birding in every station), and then after lunch walking
back to the city (3 hrs downhill) from the second station called “La Montaña”,
(we suggest to start around two) look for the trail (primary clouded forest
on the northern face of Sierra Nevada National Park) and follow it
down to the village of El Arenal, cross the Chama River and walk up through
“Cuesta del Teleférico” to be in the city again in the late evening.

Sierra Nevada’s National Park station. Humboldt trail (Chestnut-crowned

Woodstar, Scaly-naped Parrot, Golden-crowned Flycatcher, Green and Black
Fruiteater, Whitefronted Redstar,...). Lunch in the City.
If the weather conditions are ok we will take a midday trip to the Cable
Car with lunch at the top (optional). Afternoon birding on the way to Los
Nevados, via El Morro (45 min.) . After the Sierra Nevada’s National Park
sign, the road goes across almost 8 km. approx, of pristine and primary
cloud forest. Birding walk in the area. (Roadside
